Traumatic Brain Injury Could Follow a New Mexico Car Crash
One of the most common and severe injuries drivers may sustain after being involved in a New Mexico car accident is traumatic brain injury (TBI). This type of injury is typically caused by a jolt or blow to the head which occurs when drivers hit their heads on steering wheels or windshields, or by some other external force.
Brain injury is considered to be a serious health issue facing New Mexico and our nation because it isn't predictable. Disabilities such as emotional, physical, behavioral, and intellectual problems can occur and medical tests may not detect a brain injury because the results of brain injury are not always visible. Also, doctors are not always able to predict lifestyle changes that can be caused by this injury. These changes can be temporary or permanent and they include difficulty seeing, hearing, talking, balancing, remembering, and processing.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reviewed death rates from traumatic brain injury in thirty-four states in 2004, and found that New Mexico has the second-highest fatality rate. Because of the thousands of people who die from brain injuries every year, the New Mexico Department of Health's Epidemiology and Response Division/Office of Injury Prevention conducted a study to look into this health concern.
The findings were released in March 2010. The results showed that from 2004 to 2006 an average of 1,157 people died of traumatic brain injuries each year in New Mexico. The report indicated that motor vehicle accidents in New Mexico accounted for 22 percent of all traumatic brain injury deaths, and that such accidents were the leading cause of death in children aged 15 and younger.
New Mexicans who survive TBI will have to live with long term disabilities and will need ongoing treatment. If you or a family member have been involved in a serious car accident in New Mexico and have sustained brain injury, you may need medical care for life and you may be entitled to compensation for medical and hospital bills, rehabilitation, and lost income, among other things.
