Carlsbad 2-year-old's death offers grave reminder of pedestrian safety

Posted on Sep 20, 2010

Carlsbad, New Mexico – September 7, 2010
The death of a 2-year-old child in Carlsbad has provided a grave reminder of the importance of safe driving when children are present.
Aubrey Michelle Chitwood was struck and killed in the driveway of her family home on Sunday by a car driven by her grandfather. The child was pronounced dead at Carlsbad Medical Center, according to the Eddy County Sheriff’s Department.
The child followed her grandfather outside while the family moved cars before leaving for church.
The New Mexico Traffic Safety Bureau reports that 11 children age 4 and under were killed in pedestrian accidents in 2008, that number was down from 18 in 2007. By contrast, 11 were killed in 2006 and 13 in 2005.
New Mexico motorists should keep in mind the state’s most vulnerable citizens, its children, when behind the wheel.
